FAVOURITES UPSET AT AFRICAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Anas
Fattar (MAR) and Ola Abou Zekri (EGY) were the surprise 18 & under
champions at last week’s rain-hit 28th ITF/CAT African Junior
Championships in
Mauritius.
The presence of Cyclone Hennie in the region brought heavy rain
throughout the week, although a modified format and the use of
additional venues ensured that the event only had to be extended by
one day. Unfortunately the doubles events were cancelled.
In the boys’ 18 & under singles, top
seed Reda El Amrani (MAR) lost a three-set quarterfinal to No. 8
seed Kevin Kerr (RSA). Kerr, winner of the warm-up event, scored
another three-set victory over No. 5 seed Hakim Rezgui (TUN) in the
semifinals to set up a meeting with sixth seed Anas Fatta. Fatta,
who did not drop a set en route to the final, went on to clinch the
title with a narrow 57 64 75 triumph.
The girls’ 18 & under singles saw a
repeat of the 2004 final, with No. 2 seed Ola Abou Zekri overturning
last year’s result against teammate and top seed Magy Aziz (EGY) 57
75 62. In the semifinals Abou Zekri had avenged her defeat in the
warm-up event with a straight sets victory over Mauritius Junior
Champion Else Potgeiter (RSA).
There were no upsets in the 16 & under
category with Rikus De Villers (RSA) and Fatim El Allami (MAR)
justifying their top seedings. However De Villiers needed to save
four match points in the boys’ final to defeat No. 3 seed Slah
Mbarek (TUN) 62 26 76(8) in a repeat of the 2003 14 & under final.
In the semifinals Mbarek had avenged his defeat by No. 2 seed Lofo
Ramiaramanana (MAD) in the warm-up final. El Allami, who had stepped
up a category to reach the 18 & under warm-up final, dropped only
one set to become girls’ 16 & under champion. She defeated Amira
Benaissa (ALG) 46 63 63 in the semifinals, before seeing off No. 2
seed and warmup champion Chane Hines (RSA) 62 63.
Due to the weather, all 14 & under
semifinals and finals had to be played on the last day. Boys’ No. 1
seed James Munro (RSA) had few problems winning his second title in
two weeks, defeating Sunday Emmanuel (NGR) 61 61 in the semifinals
and Ramy Kamal Etah (EGY) 61 75 in the final. However the girls’ top
seed Menna El Nagdy (EGY) ran out of steam in the final, losing to
Yasmine Alkema (ALG) 67(8) 62 76(2), having needed three sets to
defeat Monica Gorny (RSA) earlier in the day.
South Africa
was awarded The Team Trophy, presented to the nation that has
accumulated the highest number of points based on the best four
singles results of a team. Separate Boys’ and Girls’ Team Trophies
were awarded to
South Africa
boys and
Egypt
girls.

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS NEWS
ITF
renews agreement with Cruyff Foundation
The ITF announced that it has renewed
its agreement with the Johan Cruyff Foundation as a programme
partner for the Wheelchair Tennis Silver Fund for 2005- 2006. The
Cruyff Foundation began financing the Silver Fund in 2003,
supporting the development of wheelchair tennis in several
countries, including
Bolivia,
Romania,
Sri Lanka,
El Salvador
and
Indonesia.
The new agreement will extend the
relationship between the Cruyff Foundation and the ITF to establish
wheelchair tennis programmes in
Bulgaria,
Moldova,
Colombia,
Morocco
and
China.
The Cruyff Foundation is also a programme partner for the wheelchair
tennis junior programme that aims to increase the competitive and
training opportunities available to junior wheelchair tennis
players.
On the signing of the new agreement, ITF
President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “We are delighted to continue
our relationship with the Cruyff Foundation. The Silver Fund has
already made a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of
children and adults worldwide and further programmes will allow us
to introduce wheelchair tennis in many other countries where players
are eager to embrace the game.”
Carole Thate, director of the Johan
Cruyff Foundation said: “We are very proud of the achievements
within the Silver Fund project. Our partnership focuses on having
coaches and players participate in teaching the basics of wheelchair
tennis to children. This project not only informs but also
stimulates children in third-world countries to participate in the
great sport of wheelchair tennis.”
The Wheelchair Tennis Silver Fund was
set up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of wheelchair tennis. The
Fund aims to establish sustainable wheelchair tennis programmes in
developing nations through the provision of tennis equipment and
technical expertise and the identification of local partners who
will take the programme to self-supporting levels.
The Cruyff Foundation supports and
stimulates play and sport for children worldwide, with a special
focus on sports programmes for children with a disability. The
Foundation supports a wide variety of sports projects including
street soccer, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and
swimming.
