Level 1 Coaches Course in Gaborone, Botswana (20- 31 January)
An ITF/Olympic Solidarity Beginner & Intermediate Level I course was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on January 20-31 2011. The course was a project supported by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) and Botswana Olympic Committee (BNOC) and Botswana National Sports Council. The course tutors were Mr. Riaan Kruger (RSA), the ITF development officer for Southern Africa, and Mr. Mthandazo Sibanda, responsible for coaching in Botswana.
The ITF provided course materials, such as books, for the students and course equipment like tennis balls and rackets, as well facilitating the international course tutor. The IOC approved a grant to BNOC to take care of all the obligatory needs and the BNSC accommodated and transported the candidates. The course was preceded by a three day Play and Stay Course which was attended to by 39 persons. The majority of play and stay participants came from Gaborone while the Level I Course targeted Clubs, Botswana Integrated Schools Association regions and towns. Twenty four participants proceeded to do the Level I course and are awaiting results of the assessments which are to be officially announced from ITF London.
The participants were assessed in four key areas; tennis ability (level of play), individual coaching (technical and tactical) group coaching (tactical, organisation and communication), a written exam and their personal attributes. Candidates were mostly challenged by their level of play. Their on court presentations improved on daily basis and the course provided the participants with the latest trends in tennis teaching.
