ITF Play Tennis Course in Macau (14 - 17 March 2007)
Suresh Menon, ITF Development Officer for Asia

Macau has been undergoing rapid economic development in the last few years. The Macau Tennis Association saw an opportunity to develop tennis in the country especially with the new sporting facilities being constructed. Macau was successful in its application to be a member of the ITF in 2006 and as a member of ITF, the Macau Tennis Association (MTA) is now able to receive ITF expertise and assistance to further develop tennis in the country.

One of the main areas MTA is focusing on is coaches' education. With the support of the Sports Institute, the MTA organized a Play Tennis Course from 14 - 17 March 2007. This was the first ever ITF activity conducted in Macau. A total of 45 coaches registered for the course of which 29 fully attended the course that was conducted by ITF expert Suresh Menon. The four day course introduced the participants to modified equipment to teach starter players to serve, play and score from the beginning of the lesson.

MTA chairman Mr Ma Iao Iao was very pleased with the response from the local coaches. He was pleasantly surprised that the course not only attracted so many participants but also the enthusiasm that was displayed by the participants. Mr. Ma Iao Iao hopes to organize a Level I Coaches Course once the present coaches have gained a greater understanding of the Play Tennis concept of introducing tennis to starter players. He is confident that this is only the beginning and more ITF activities will be organized in the near future.
