TENNIS PLAY AND STAY CAMPAIGN
Tennis Europe promotes 'Play and Stay'
campaign
The 'Tennis Play and Stay' campaign gained momentum last week when Tennis Europe held their Specific Theme conference at Angie Tennis Centre in Poznan, Poland on 21-22 April. The Specific Theme conference takes places every two years, with 'Play and Stay' the focus in Poznan. Two hundred coaches, and national and regional association staff, from 23 nations got their first taste of the campaign that aims to increase tennis participation by improving the way that starter players, both children and adults, are introduced to the game. The event, hosted by the Polish Tennis Federation, began with an introduction by the ITF's Director of Development, Dave Miley, followed by presentations on a variety of topics including 'Developing and Promoting Participation Programmes', 'Tennis is Healthy', 'The Ball is Key', 'Tennis is Competition' and 'Ten Steps to Rally'. To prove how easy competition can be, the event finished with speakers running a team competition for over 120 coaches on fourteen 'Red' (11m/36ft long) courts over three full sized courts. In less than 20 minutes, over 200 singles matches were played. Hrvoje Zmajic, ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer, said: "Participation in tennis is crucial for the future of our sport. 'Play and Stay' uses best practices from different countries in promoting tennis and especially in working with starter players. The conference informed participants about the most successful promotion and modern teaching programmes for starter players." Brazil launches 'Play and Stay' programme
Brazil became the first nation to announce its plans for 'Tennis Play and Stay' when the Brazilian Tennis Federation (CBT) launched its programme at the recent Davis Cup tie against Canada in Florianopolis. 'Tennis Play and Stay' is the ITF's new participation drive that promotes tennis as easy, fun and healthy, with the goal of retaining more players. It improves the way starter players are introduced to the game through the use of slower red, orange and green balls on smaller courts to help players serve, rally and score from the first lesson. Cesar Kist and Eduardo Eche from the CBT, who attended the ITF's 'Play and Stay' seminar in London in February, introduced the programme to 45 coaches attending the tie. Among those taking part were Brazilian Davis Cup Captain Francisco Costa, his assistant coaches and two members of the team, who attended on- and off-court workshops, in between securing a 3-1 victory for the home nation. The ITF will be formally launching the campaign and 'Play and Stay' website at the ITF's AGM in Tunis on 20-22 June.
Play Tennis Course in Syria
Syria's first "Play Tennis Course" was held in Damascus from the 21st till the 24th of March 2007 with 24 coaches from all over Syria participating. The course took place in the National Development Centre in Fyahaa Sport City. The participants were introduced to the principals of "Play & Stay" and practically conduct lessons in which they tried to make beginners serve, rally and score by modifying courts, balls and rules. Also they were introduced to ITN and the ITN On-Court assessment. With the cooperation of the ITF the Play Tennis Course Manual was translated to Arabic and the course was fully conducted in Arabic. Also with the permission of the ITF, the Syrian Tennis Federation adapted this course as the Syrian Level I Certification. The Syrian Coaches' Committee prepared practical and written exams and will give the coaches who passed both tests the Syrian Level I Certification along with the ITF Certificate of Attendance which was given on the last day to all the participants. |
