TENNIS... PLAY AND STAY CAMPAIGNThree more Nations launch Play and Stay James Newman, ITF Play and Stay Coordinator Ireland, Portugal and South Africa recently added their names to the growing list of Nations to launch Play and Stay, a campaign that aims to improve the way starter players are introduced to the game. Portugal were first to take action when they launched alongside the official ITF launch on 20 June 2007. The Portuguese Tennis Federation (FPT) attracted many coaches to attend the seminar which was held at the National Stadium in Lisbon. Vitor Cabral of the FPT said, "I am very pleased to say that the launch of the program was very well received in Portugal. It was our goal to organize a simultaneous launch with the ITF, making a strong stand on our commitment to the project. Attendance was very good. Also a good surprise was the media coverage. It was very refreshing to see this event getting some attention from the TV and newspapers." South Africa followed next with a Play and Stay seminar held in Pretoria on 25-27 June. Mark Tennant, ITF Participation Coordinator presented a series of workshops during the event, "A large number of coaches attended and got their first taste of Play and Stay. The reaction was fantastic and with the support of SATA (South African Tennis Association) I believe the campaign can have a big impact in increasing participation in this region". The latest country to introduce Play and Stay was Ireland. Their coaches and administrators attended a seminar at the historic Fitzwilliam LTC in Dublin. Organised and run by Tennis Ireland, the event ran alongside the Irish Open, a $50000 ATP Challenger event. Roger Geraghty, Development Director for Tennis Ireland said, "Tennis...Play and Stay' can have a big impact on our sport. It promotes a simple but strong message that can improve the way tennis is introduced by coaches and dramatically change how tennis is perceived by prospective players. We strongly believe that the future for starter tennis players is slower balls, smaller courts, easy game."
