WORLDWIDE COACHES CONFERENCE CONFIRMED SPEAKER

Albert Costa

Costa won his first top-level singles title in 1995 at Kitzbühel. He won three further titles in 1996. In 1997, he won another two singles titles and was part of the Spanish team that won the World Team Cup. He won another two singles titles in 1998, including the Tennis Masters Series event in Hamburg. Three further titles followed in 1999.

In 2000, Costa helped Spain win its first Davis Cup. He also captured a bronze medal in the men's doubles at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, partnering Álex Corretja.

During the French Open in 2002, Costa came up against another Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final. Ferrero had been in fine form in the run-up to the event and most observers considered him to be the heavy favourite going into the final. But Costa won in four sets - 6-1, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 - to claim his only Grand Slam title. The win propelled him to his career-high singles ranking of World No. 6 in July 2002.

During his career, Costa won 12 top-level singles titles. In 2005, he captured his first tour doubles title (in Doha, partnering Rafael Nadal). Costa took over the role of Davis Cup Captain of Spain in 2009 and defeated Serbia at home in Spain's first tie of the World Group.

COACHING COURSES IN AFRICA

COACHES EDUCATION IN EUROPE

Estonia hosts Play and Stay Workshop

The Estonian Tennis Association hosted a Play and Stay Workshop for 30 local coaches from 17 - 19 April. The aim of the Workshop was to give an overview of the Play and Stay campaign, highlighting the importance of the various types of competitions and the appropriate types of practise on red, orange and green courts.

The two and a half day course conducted by ITF/Tennis Europe expert, Mike Barrell, focused on topics such as physical literact and lesson planning for various 10 & Under age groups.

Allar Hint of the Estonian Tennis Association was responsible for the organisation of the course, and commented, "This was a most useful few days for us as we seek to introduce Play and Stay methodology to Estonia. All the coaches in attendance were enthusiastic about what they had seen and many will be able to put it immediately into practice with their youngest players. We'd like to thank the ITF and Tennis Europe for their help, and are already looking forward to providing similar opportunities for our coaches in the near future."

Moldova hosts its first ever Level 2 Coaches Course

The first ever Level 2 Coaches' course took place in Kishinau, Moldova from 14 - 24 April under the supervision of ITF/Tennis Europe expert Piotr Unierzyski from Poland. Twelve candidates took part in the Course which aims to prepare coaches to work with advanced junior players. Modern training methodology, biomechanics of tennis technique and tactical development are some of the topics that should help the participating coaches in their future work.

Hrvoje Zmajic, ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer: "Coaches' Education is one of the cornerstones of developing tennis worldwide and especially in less developed countries such as Moldova. Educated coaches are able to maximize performance of their players by developing their potential and preparing them for the professional game."
