COACHING COURSES IN ASIA

ITF Inspired United Tennis Coaches, Philippines

An ITF/OS Level 2 Coaches Course held in the Philippines last November was indeed a valuable experience for all of the coaches who attended the course. The 12 days of tennis education with fellow coaches from Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines, and with the tutors, Suresh Menon, Benny Lin and Suang Chantra-urai, was extremely successful in helping the coaches. By sharing knowledge without holding back one bit inspired us to form a group dubbed as United Tennis Coaches, Philippines.

United Tennis Coaches, Philippines' concept is to have our local coaches get united, help each other, share knowledge and work together as one tennis family to develop world class champions. We believe that with any sports competition being so demanding in every aspect of the game, it is important for the coaches to help equip the players with solid and updated education and training programs that will help them harness their skills.

On January 16, 17 and 23, 2010, the United Tennis Coaches, Philippines started its campaign in promoting tennis education by conducting free tennis lessons in sponsored venues at The Manila Polo Club, Hillsborough Tennis Club and San Juanico Tennis Club respectively. The event was very successful with over 150 tennis players participating, hungry for more and wanting to learn new and scientific tennis.

Inspired by International Tennis Federation (ITF), and with the dream of making things happen for Filipino tennis players, the United Tennis Coaches, Philippines will continue its advocacy in sharing world class tennis education.

United Tennis Coaches, Philippines is headed by its core group Bobby Armillo, Edward Puno, Von Ruelan and Pop Sabandon. Volunteer coaches were also present in the event to share what they got.

COACHING COURSES IN AFRICA

Kenya hosts Level 2 Coaches Course

A regional Level 2 coaches course came to an end at the Parklands Sports Club, in Nairobi, Kenya over the weekend. The 12-day course, which was organised by the Kenya Lawn Tennis Association, was funded by Olympic Solidarity through the Kenyan Olympic Committee.

Apart from Kenyan coaches, coaches from countries within the region also attended the course. Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda are some of the countries whose coaches benefited from the course which was conducted by Ales Filipcic from Slovenia and Prince Madema, ITF Development Officer for East Africa.

The coaches were tested on the ability to play and their individual and group lesson teaching as well as undertaking a written test.

"The Level 2 course is a monster course. It is two weeks of hard work and really valuable information; you never stop reading", said Mike Githinji, one of the top Kenyan coaches.

The course ended with the Chairman of the Kenya Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Patrick Gichira, giving words of encouragement and motivation. He said the fact that the coaches attended the course showed their desire to want to improve themselves and the tennis coaching standard in the region. Therefore, he is optimistic that the region as a whole did benefit from the course and he hoped other Associations would do the same and organise similar courses in the future.
